Project: Investigation and Production of Ferrofluids
|
The project made by two young researchers, Fabian Nickel and Timo Stein, at the Hahn-Meitner-Institute's School Laboratory in Berlin deals with ferrofluids.
Ferrofluids are liquids containing some 10 nm magnetic particles covered with a surfant to prevent agglomeration. They are used in different fields e.g. as seals in ultra-vacuum technology, as stealth technology and as a new treatment for cancer. The objective was to understand their special behaviour and their properties and later to produce them self. The last step was to discover and develop new ways of using this magnetic fluids.
The project started in May 2006 and took part at "Jugend forscht", Germany's biggest competion for young scientist. At the final contest in Hamburg the two team members got the Prize of the German Society of Physics for their effort.
